Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 25 year old active and athletic male who had bilateral inguinal hernia surgery almost a year ago... I completely took it easy after the surgery and did not return to sports until after 2 months of rehab, through which i felt no pain... In the last 2 weeks, i have been experiencing pain in the same area's that i did right before the surgery. I feel the pain in my lower abdomen when lifting from the ground and even in my testicles when i sneeze hard or cough... After a laproscopic procedure with mesh, could i possible have a hernia again in virtually the same place? What else could it be? Thank you!
Dear Jeffrey: Though it is not common to have a recurrence after laparoscopic hernia repair, it is possible. Whether or not you actually have a recurrence its impossible for me to say without a physical examination and further details. Other explanations for your pain could be a complication of your procedure such as nerve entrapment or injury. The pain could also be entirely unrelated to your hernia surgery an could be cause by strained abdominal/groin muscles. you should see your physician for a thorough evaluation. |
