Hernia on Dialysis |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My 55 year old grandmother is on dialayis with a hernia what effects can she experiance from having both? she is not supposed to be on dialayis with a hernia is she? Dear Lorraine: You do not state the type of dialysis your grandmother is undergoing. If she is undergoing hemodialysis (dialysis via a catheter in a blood vessel), this should have no effect on her hernia nor vice versa. Peritoneal dialysis (dialysis via a catheter in the abdomen) would most likely not be undertaken in someone with a hernia. Dialysis side effects commonly include low blood pressure, leg cramps, nausea and vomiting and headaches. There are also complications that can arise as a result of dialysis that are best discussed with your grandmother’s doctor. Abdominal wall hernias can become complicated causing severe pain, constipation, vomiting and may require emergency surgery. She should discuss the treatment options for her hernia with her surgeon. |
