Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello. I am 40, male, American, living in a remote camp in Tanzania. I have hardness in the center of my belly with some sharp (not severe) pains when I press down there. I can feel a strong pulse there, which I have read is an aortic pulse and quite normal. I often have pain in my lower abdomen as well. I am very far from medical attention, so I am asking for advice on whether to fly out and have get checked. Thanks very much. Mark
Dear Mark: In my opinion, you may have developed a belly hernia or umbilical hernia. It may require early repair to avoid complications due to obstruction, strangulation or tissue damage of the involved part. Association of the pain at the site of hernia and lower abdomen indicates the necessity for clinical examination and evaluation of the condition.
