Hernia Repair Surgery on Right Side of Groin

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I had hernia repair surgery back in 4th grade on my vagina. I was young so I do not know what type of hernia I had. I am now 22 years old. Can I still do weights at the gym, like working out my calves and toning my legs by using weights? Lately I felt a slight pain on my vagina (right side where I got the surgery), but I am not sure if I should be worried. Can an X-ray be taken to see if my muscles or internal tissues are still intact or if they are open again? Please help.
Dear Pauline: It has been many years since your hernia repair procedure. It should be safe for you to do aerobics and resistance exercises using weights. However, if you have doubts, it is best to avoid any exercises or maneuvers which may increase intra-abdominal pressure until you have had your symptoms evaluated. A CT scan can often identify a hernia which is not clinically obvious..
