Dear Ask The Doctor: What exactly is a hernia and how do I know if I have one? I am experiencing pain ion the right side of my groin that shoots dowm ny right leg.
Dear Chris: A abdominal hernia is an abnormal protrusion of the abdominal contents through one or more layers of the abdominal wall. The groin or inguinal area is common area for a hernia. Symptoms of groin hernia include a swelling/lump in th groin which may or may not be painful. The swelling may spontaneously disappear when you ly down. The swelling may extend into the scrotum. If the swelling is painful, the pain does not usually shoot down the leg.
I suggest you see your doctor as soon as possible. While your symptoms may be the result of a hernia, there are other possibilities to consider such as a trapped nerve. Please do not delay in visiting your physician. |
