Ruling out a possible hernia

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello I just lifted about 150 pounds of bottled water. Right after that I felt a sharp, deep pain in my pubic area. I'm afraid it could be a hernia. Should I go to the ER or wait to see if it swells or goes away?
Dear Billy: The symptoms you have written may be due to a possible hernia and a physician will definitely be able to tell you if you have a hernia by physical examination. Though the pain may also be due to a muscular strain, it is important to rule out hernia even in the absence of a visible or palpable lump. You may wait and watch and see how the symptoms progress. If you notice that pain is increasing, or you develop a fever, have not passed stools or flatus, then you may need to go to the ER immediately |
