Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, Whenever I go to the doctors they always test my blood pressure and it is always high. Today in one of my classes at school, the teacher was talking about blood pressure and I mentioned that mine was high, so she tested it twice and it was high again. I was wondering why this could be. I am 16 and slightly overweight which I know doesn't help but wondered what else this could be.
Dear Hannah: High blood pressure in a young adult could be indicative of an underlying renal pathology such as glomerulonephritis or renal artery disease. Obesity and thyroid disease could also cause an increase in the blood pressure. You may need to consult your doctor for further tests and analysis to determine the cause of your high blood pressure. In the meantime, lifestyle modifications like healthy diet, exercise and restriction of salt may help in reducing blood pressure. |
