Uncontrolled Hypertension

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have very high blood pressure and taking meds for it but nothing seems to work...is this dangrous and can I drive a 18 wheeler like this...it was 195 123 today with meds.

Dear Mark:Your BP control is unsatisfactory despite your current treatment and puts you a high risk for cardiovascular complications. I suggest that you attend your family doctor for a full history, clinical examination, and a complete blood work-up. He may also perform a 24 hour ambulatory BP monitor, which will give a more accurate assessment of your blood pressure throughout the day. Lifestyle measures that can be modified include: weight reduction, increased daily physical activity, limit alcohol intake 2-3 units per day, smoking cessation and reduced saturated fat/cholesterol and salt intake. The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) has been promoted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. You may require an alteration of your medication, or a combination of more than one agent to achieve optimal blood pressure control.
