Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 23 years old 7 and a half stone and my height is around 5:6 I had my blood pressure taken in novemeber which was 118,87 i was told this was a bit high, i had my blood pressure taken today from a nurse and it was 119,97 pulse rate 113 but she said this is normal i am confused as to who is right and if it is high what do i do about it? thank you
Dear Janna: High blood pressure is defined as bp over 130/90. Your blood pressure seems to be at the border line. While the systolic reading ie the upper one ie 118 and 119 is normal however the diastolic reading ie the lower one of 87 and above 90 is high. You can adopt some lifestyle changes like improved diet rich in fibre and low in fat, regular aerobic exercise and weight reduction had all proven to have benefitted blood pressure readings. Also ensure to monitor your pressure over the next few months and if continually elavated please see your physician for further examination and tests. All the best. |
