Stopping Blood Pressure Pills, Dangerous? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: What are the dangers of stopping high blood pressure pills? my friend who has this condition, plus diabetes, and circulation problems in his feet and legs stopped this blood pressure pill three weeks ago and says he is going to stop his diabetic pills as well once they are finished. I don't think this is a very wise decision but despite my concern, he is going to do this anyway. I am concerned because he is 65 and not a robust type. He sleeps a lot and seems to eat the wrong kinds of food. Dear Dianne: It can be life threatening to get off the blood pressure pills suddenly. Blood pressure pills help maintain your blood pressure, and in their absence, blood pressure can shoot up causing stress to the heart, irregular heart beats and heart attacks. Your friend should work with a doctor and try getting off the medication slowly or consider replacing the current drug to avoid blood pressure from getting too high too quickly. Even without any signs of symptoms, you should not assume that it is fine to get off the drugs without proper consideration with your doctor, especially in cases of blood pressure, diabetes, heart and blood diseases.
