Generic Drug for Benicar

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is there a generic drug that is comparable to Benicar HCT? I know this drug has a patent, but I can't afford $107.00 per month for this.

Dear Diana: Benicar HCT or olmesartan belongs to the group of drugs called "angiotensin II receptor antagonists" which help keep blood vessels from narrowing to improve the blood flow and control blood pressure. A generic is not available in the market as yet and the patent is supposed to expire in 2016. In my opinion you might want to talk to your doctor about switching over to other blood pressure medications that have comparable results and fewer side effects which may suits your situation.
