Can I work out with high blood pressure?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My bp is high at around 150 95, is it safe for me to work out?

Dear Hinyuk: If you have high blood pressure, the best thing is to listen to your body. How your body feels can dictate the frequency and intensity of your workouts. You can definately workout regularly, but avoid intense exercise such as competitive sport, heavy weightlifting, press-ups or any exercise that causes chest pains or involves standing up quickly from the floor. Vigorous activities like these can cause a sudden sharp increase in your blood pressure that could be dangerous. Aerobics are the best group of exercises for persons with heart and blood pressure conditions. Stop exercising and rest if you develop any of the symptoms such as chest pain, weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness, pressure or pain in your chest, neck, arm, jaw, or shoulder or any other symptoms that cause concern. Call your doctor or seek emergency treatment immediately if these symptoms do not go away quickly, or if such symptoms continue to recur.
