Dear Ask The Doctor: Never smoked, never drink alcohol, tennis everyday for 3 hours fairly healthy diet (I live in Thailand and tend to eat a lot of fresh chicken, fish, vegetables and fruit, virtually no western food such as burgers and fries) but have just had a BP reading of 179 over 100 with a pulse rate of 59. What might be the cause of such high blood pressure? I feel fine for a 54 yr old, no aches or pains etc.
Dear David: This one time or an occasional, high blood pressure reading could be due to the changes in emotions status, physical activity, secondary to certain diseases, medications, anxiety or nervousness. It could be a temporary change of your BP, which may come back to a normal range with removal of any factor that nat gave triggered this change. The diagnosis of hypertension is based on obtaining similar readings on 3 or more different occasions, persistently. |
