Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi I am 26 Years old male. 6 Months Back I checked Blood Pressure and it was 125 by 85 and i did not worry but now a days i was feeling my heartbeats sometimes faster and i checked my BP it was 150 by 100, after i came back home i went to other doctor he checked my BP and that time it was 130 by 85. I may mention that last week i was having severe sore throat and i went to doctor, he gave me medicine and i asked him to check my BP and it was 130 by 90 and he advised me to start Blood Pressure medicine and he also advised me to take advice from MD doctor. I felt very tensed and went to my family doctor who is MD and told him everything and he asked me to get LIPID PROFILE and some other tests done and result was cholesterol level was near the border line and Triglycerides was bit high and i showed doctor the reports and doctor asked me about any stressful life and i told him that i do have very-very stressful life and asked me to relax, reduce weight and healthy diet and he doctor said he don't recommend to start any blood pressure controlling medicine he just said reduce weight and diet change etc. Please advise me that what should i do to be on safer side. My age is 26 and weight is 89 kg.
Dear Amandeep: I would definately advice you to start with lifestyle modifications first considering your BP level is not too high. Lifestlye modifications are the first step towards bp management and can be very effective if followed through. You need to start exercising ( preferably some cardio) for atleast 30 mins a day for 4-5days/week. Along with that you also need to eat healthier, reduce intake of red meat, increase intake of fish, green vegetables and fruits and nuts like walnuts. Use the lifestyle modification method first and if it fails then it would be necessary to start on medication. All the best |
