High Blood Pressure Indication of Diabetes?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 31 year old female, overweight and have consistently had a blood pressure reading of 130 over 90 for the last several months. My normal blood pressure range was always a little on the low side, and this raise in pressure concerns me. I also have a strong history of type 2 diabetes in my family. Would this blood pressure range be considered too high for me? And would it be causing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and tingling and numbness of toes? Could it be an indicator of the onset of diabetes? I have no other typical diabetic symptoms;thirst, weight loss, etc.
Dear Maggie: A consistent blood pressure reading of 130/90 is known as prehypertension. In order to have hypertension ie high blood pressure one needs consistently high readings of >130/90. While diabetes is a risk factor for hypertension and vice versa it does not direclty lead to this condition. The dizziness and nausea may be due to the high blood pressure. You need to monitor your pressure often and also try lifestlyle modifications in the form of weight loss, exercise and decreasing salt intake. All the best. |
