Hypertension Chance of Death in a Year Per Systolic Point

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is there any truth to the statement, "For every point your systolic blood pressure rises over 90 there is a one percent increased risk of mortality." IF not, how is hypertension risk assessed?
Dear Judi: While i am unaware of the exact numbers i would agree with the fact that increase in blood pressure does lead to increased risk of heart disease and mortality due to complications arising out of long term high blood pressure. The normal blood pressure is 120/80 ie systolic/diastolic. It is typically considered increased risk if there is long standing undiagnosed and untreated high blood pressure ie hypertension. I hope this helps. |
