Nose bleeding in Colon Cancer Survivor

Dear Ask The Doctor: My husband is a colon canser servivoer. He was diagnosed to have colon cancer and was operated on in 1997 after that he went through a chimo and radio therapy treatment for almost two years. He,s 75 years now, recently,he sometimes bleeds from his nose without any pain what so ever.He 's got high blood pressre and takes medicineand I always check his blood pressure. Please I'd like to know if this bleeding has anything todo with his blood pressure or his cancer or is it serious. thanks in advance

Dear Fatima: Nose bleeds have many causes. The most common cause is trauma of some sort and may be as simple as picking one’s nose too frequently. High blood pressure is a recognized indirect cause of nose bleeds and most likely explains your husband’s case. However, given his age, I recommend an evaluation by an ENT specialist to rule out more serious causes such as nasal tumors.
