Overdose of eltroxin, what are its side effects?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I was on the incorrect dose of eltroxin 200 MCG Levothyroxine sodium for 6 months. I should have been on 100 MCG.The prescription was correct it was the pharmacies error bottle was written correctly medication inside was wrong dose. Are there any long term effects from being on a double dose for 6 months and could anything could have happened to me while I was on a double dose?? Thanks Lorna

Dear Lorna: I do understand your concern for overdose of eltroxin. In adults, the usual dose is 50 micrograms to 100 micrograms daily, increased every 4 to 6 weeks as needed. The maximum dose of eltroxin is 200 micrograms daily.

An overdose of eltroxin can cause agitation, confusion, irritability, hyperactivity, sweating, headaches, fever, dilated pupils, loose stools, palpitations and seizures. I would advise that you see your doctor and have a thyroid level done.
