Hypothyroidism with no symptoms - should I medicate?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My doctor has diagnosed me with Hypothyroidism based on a high TSH (15). We are also waiting for a T3 and T4 screen to come back to verify the diagnosis. However I feel absolutely fine! I'm 40 years old and am in great shape. My cholesterol levels are just right. My blood pressure is perfect. I have no symptoms of hypothyroid. If my blood screen comes back verifying low thyroid production, should I take medicine if I feel great? The only problem I have is mild psoriasis on my scalp and knees. I control it with shampoo and lotion.

Dear Jeff: Typically the symptoms of hypothyroidism are low energy, weight gain, decreased appetite, scanty hair and hair loss, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin etc. If your TSH level was a borderline high ( as each lab has its own reference levels) and you are currently not experiencing any symptoms you could avoid medication however be sure to get ir rechecked in about 6 months so as to follow the trend of the levels. However if your TSH level is extremely high along with low t3 and t4 levels it would be advisable to start medication as you eventually would get certain symptoms .
