Treatment and management for Hypothyroidism

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can a underactive tyroid be treated with iodine

Dear Caroline: Underactive thyroid ie Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland secretes less thyroid hormone and thus leads to symptoms. This is not treated with iodine ( which is infact a treatment for hyperthyroidism ) but with replacing the actual thyroid hormone through a medication called levo thyroxine. Please consult your health care practitioner for a check up if you are experiencing any symptoms. All the best.
