Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been diagnosed with a slightly raised tsh level but doctor has decided on no medication at the moment.I suffer from bad excess phlem in my throat, could you tell me whether it is connected.I take tablets for acid reflux.clearing my throat constantly is driving me mad, I have had this for 3 years.the thyroid problem was picked up about 10 months ago.and if I remember rightly I think my tsh level ranged at one point from 14, to 18
Slight elevations in TSH levels are common and its cause may not be determined. However, this may be transient and may spontaneously resolve after a few months. Iodine is essential in production of thyroid hormones. Iodine content is very high in seafood; if your diet is seafood deficient, this may cause mild elevations in TSH. You may request your doctor to monitor your TSH levels every 3-6 months perhaps, just to reassure you. With regards to your throat, your symptoms are consistent w/ acid reflux and it is more likely a different entity unrelated to the thyroid problem. The acid from your stomach may slide up to the esophagus and may reach the throat; as a protective mechanism, the throat produces more mucus (aka phlegm). Continue taking the meds for acid reflux as it will greatly improve the condition. To help with the reflux symptoms, try avoiding carbonated beverages, coffee, tea, smoking as these may increase acid production in the stomach. You may also add 1-3 pillows under your head while sleeping as this will elevate the head and lesser chances for acid reflux. I hope I have enlightened you in some way. Take care always. |
