Hypothyroid patient's bypass surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, My 63 year old hypothyroid (TSH is at 120)aunt has been diagnosed with 2 completely blocked and 1 partially blocked arteries. Her doctor has prescribed levothyroxine for the thyroid. Is it advisable for her to undergo a Bypass surgery or does she have to wait till her TSH levels come down? Please guide.

Dear Meher: Your aunt's doctors will do a complete assessment before going ahead with surgery. However, her TSH levels are not the only factors to be considered. If her thyroxine levels are normal then she will be cleared for surgery. It is advisable that she have her bypass surgery as soon as possible. A high TSH level but normal throxine levels will allow her to safely have surgery.
