Dear Ask The Doctor:When a patient has a kidney failure, a diet low in potassium (2000 mg of potassium per day) is recommended because the kidney is not working as it should and the levels of this electrolyte might accumulate in the blood.
High levels of Potassium can accumulate up to dangerous levels in the blood. This causes irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia), confusion or a heart attack. The following vegetables and fruits are known to have low potassium levels in serving only.
Asparagus – 6 spears
Beans (wax or green)
Cabbage (red and green)
Celery (1 stalk)
Corn (Fresh - ½ ear, Frozen - ½ cup)
Apple – 1 medium/juice/sauce
Apricots, canned in juice
Grapefruit, ½ whole
Peaches – Fresh (1 small), Canned (½ cup)
Pears – Fresh (1 small), Canned (½ cup)
Plums – 1 whole
Tangerine – 1 whole
Watermelon – 1 cup
It is also suggested to decrease salt intake, monitor Blood pressure and avoid certain medications that are metabolized through the kidneys such as NSAID’s. I wish him a prompt recovery.
