Effects of too many vitamins?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I'm 25 and I'm very into taking natural vitamins. I take about 6 a day and some I need to take more than once a day. The vitamins I take daily are: metamucil, fish oil, biotin, B 12, D3 and lecithin concentrate. I heard too many pills is bad for your liver, does that also apply for taking a lot of vitamins?
Dear Marcie: There is no real advantage in taking more than the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals. Taking more than the recommended dose of certain vitamins and minerals may have its own disadvantages. For example consuming excess of vitamin C may lead to nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Increased selenium may cause loose stools, fatigue, hair loss and nerve damage. If you are taking supplements, I would advise that you take no more than the daily recommended value. |
