Blood test indicates raised AST, ALT and Billirubin

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, I was in the emergency room yesterday and they did a blood test on me. The results have my ALT at 323h, my AST at 261H and BILL Total at 1.4 h. The doctor was very concerned. She told me to go to my primary doctor. The problem for me is I don't have a doctor, Im laid off and do not have insurance. Is this an emergency. Pat

Dear Pat: The raised AST, ALT and total billirubin levels indicate abnormal liver functions and possibly liver damage. Best would be to consult a family doctor for immediate medical attention and to prevent further damage. You need to stop alcohol intake (if that is the case). Further investigations like ultrasound may be ordered for diagnosis of the cause.
