Can the spleen stay enlarged for years after having Mono?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can the spleen stay enlarged from mono forever? I had mono years ago and couple times a month my spleen has sharp and pressue pains. It sometimes occurs when I'm sick, full, tired, or out of the blue! I have always been able to feel my spleen under my ribs, indicating that its large. Any idea's? I'm starting to really worry. i was 17 when I first contracted mono and I'm now 21?

Dear Mike: Once infected, the virus may remain in the body for life. Periodically, the virus may reactivate, but usually without any symptoms of illness. In my opinion you should consult your doctor for an assessment of the enlarged spleen and accurate treatment. You may want to avoid vigorous contact sports that may result in the rupture of enlarged spleen. Additional tests for the identification of the cause may be recommended which includes the peripheral blood smear, ultrasound of the liver, spleen, bone marrow examination may also be indicated if the cause of splenomegaly is not identified.
