Burning pain in foot and leg

Dear Ask The Doctor: I was simply walking down the stairs. I did not step wrong at all, but an incredible pain came over my left foot when I put it down. I instantly thought my bones in my foot had crushed. The extreme pain left quickly about 5 seconds but it was enough to make me screem. The time after that and up to this point some 3 hours later my foot feels as if it is on fire and that sensation is moving up my leg and has reached my knee. What in the world? I am on no meds except tyroid meds which has been under control for years.
Dear Heather:
According to the data that you provided, you have a thyroid problem under treatment. There are many causes of tingling and numbness in the legs, for example, a herniated disc may produce a root nerve compression at a given level of the spine that causes an inflammation of the nerves and radiated pain to the arms or legs depending on the level of compression. If this compression progresses, meaning, gets worse over the time, it can produce irreversible damage of the nerve root, then the discectomy is performed to decompress the nerve root involved so the neurological symptoms (numbness, tingling and pain local and radiated to the legs) improve and also avoid damage to the nerve. On the other hand, this may be produced by: vitamin deficiencies (Vitamin B12), problems with the peripheral nerves of the legs, autiimmune problems (as for example Multiple Sclerosis) and metabolic causes as Thyroid gland issues and Diabetes. I recommend you to get a evaluation by your doctor and once that the vitamin deficiency is ruled out, proceed to review some other causes like spinal nerve compressions, peripheral nerve problems ,and review if maybe your Thyroid issue is related to your symptoms, might be important to rule out also some other metabolic causes as Diabetes, which can produce the symptoms that you described above. |
