Stabbing pain in the upper forearm

Dear Ask The Doctor: 13 years ago I fell and broke my left wrist. Before I could get treatment, my left thumb tendon sawed over the broken bone and broke, causing the thumb to drop. The surgeon could not locate the upper portion of the tendon which had recoiled up into my arm, and instead, used one of the two tendons in my index finger to graft to the thumb. For the past year I've been experiencing a stabbing pain in my left upper forearm. Could this possibly be an irritation from the "lost" thumb tendon?
Dear Pamela: It is not likely that after 13 years the “lost” thumb tendon may be producing the symptoms that you described. Most likely this may be produced by: vitamin deficiencies (Vitamin B12), problems with the peripheral nerves (ulnar or median) and metabolic causes as Thyroid gland issues and Diabetes. I recommend you to get a evaluation by your doctor and once that the vitamin deficiency is ruled out, proceed to review some other causes like peripheral nerve problems that may be compressed by scar tissue, also might be important to rule out also some other metabolic causes as Thyroid problems or Diabetes, which can produce the symptoms that you described above. |
