Dear Ask The Doctor: I noticed a few months ago that, while running or doing other jarring activities, I was experiencing rather severe pain on the outside of my left knee. Accompanying this, was slight swelling and complete numbness from my knee down. So bad that I wouldn't be able to move my foot. After numerous visits to the doctor and just being told that I had a knee strain, they finally found that I had a severe bone contusion on the fibula where it meets up with the tibia. It has now healed and re-occurred twice. Yet, the three doctors I have seen, can't figure it out. Are there any ideas I could look in to?
Dear Nia:Â According to your description, possibly the peroneal nerve was injured, and that might be the cause of the numbness, the regeneration process of the nerves is long and the healing time is different for each patient in particular depending on the severity of the injured at the beginning. There is a way to determine the conduction through the nerves, motor and sensitive; maybe if after a while you keep feeling the same numbness and no improvement, the EMG and nerve conduction study of the affected leg might be performed to determine the outcome of your case. |
