Dear Ask The Doctor: Q: Based on the following symptoms, what should I make sure my doctor tests for? All symptoms developed over a two year period. I have tested negative for, Vitamin D deficiency, Lupus, Lyme disease and many other standard tests. Symptoms: -Tingling, twitching, and shock like feelings in the tongue. -Red sunburn like rash on nose only which appear after brief sun exposure (5-10 even when wearing sun screen spf 50) -Wide spread tingling sensation -Allodynia (causing sleep disturbance) -Sharp stabbing pain in extremities which worsens at night. -Stiffness, clicking, and pain in the neck and right shoulder. -Pain in both wrist and ankles -Sciatica pain limited to right side. -Migraines with sensitivity to light, sound, and smell. -Fatigue, and general weakness -muscle twitching
Dear Sue: Your description of the symptoms suggests a condition called neuropathy, that affects the nerve function, may be due to raised sugar levels as in diabetes or other nutritional deficiencies, excessive alcohol intake or infection. You may want to consult a neurologist for evaluation of the underlying condition and accurate treatment.
