Dear Ask The Doctor: What is the surgical procedure when you cut the nerve that transfers pain to the brain, so you don't have to feel pain anymore? Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages to having this procedure, such as sensations to touch, pressure, grabbing and pleasure?
Dear Kevin: A neurectomy is a procedure in which a a nerve or portion of a nerve is surgically removed. Such a procedure is most often employed to treat chronic pain when other measures have failed. Possible complications include the development of a neuroma. This is a tumor of the nerve and can be quite painful. Other disadvantages of a such a neurectomy include loss of other senses such as touch. This will result in numbness in the area supplied by the nerve. A neurectomy for pain management will have no effect on muscle movement. |
