Dear Ask The Doctor: My name is Anna R. I am 24 years old. I have been experiencing neck pain for 5 years. I just got my MRI done--my results "straightened lordotic curvature of the cervical spine due to muscle spasms, and degenerative disc disease with minimal spondylosis, and uncinate spurring at C3-4, C4-5 and C5-6, greater at the lower two levels. I have been in physical therapy for 6 months, and chiropractor, and corizone shots were given. Do i have more options? What can i do to find a long term fix. Pain is unberable. Thanks you, Anna
Dear Anna: I can understand the pain you must be experiencing. From your MRI results it is obvious that you have some degeneration of the intravertebral discs. Thus since you have already tried out many modalities of treatment the only one left is surgery in which the part of the disc causing the problem can be removed. However any spinal surgery is extremely risky and dangerous. I would advice you to keep doing physical therapy along with back strengthening exercises and also you could have the steroid injections again to help you with the pain. Along with that NSAIDS pain killer medication may also help. All the best. |
