What are causes of leg cramps?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My husband is a Roofer and when the weather is above 80 and humid he suffers severe leg cramping. While he is hydrated there still seems to be cramping that occurs. What can we do other than keeping hydrated, eating bananas for potasium and pretzels for salt?
Dear Donna: Your husband may need to be checked through blood tests if he has electrolyte abnormalities. Mild decrease in potassium levels may cause leg cramps but severely low levels may cause heart disturbances and can potentially lead to cardiac arrest (heart stops beating). It is better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps. |
