PCOS diagnosis - continued weight loss for no reason!

Dear Ask The Doctor: I've recently been diagnosed with PCOS after having no periods for 6 months since stopping the combined pill. My main concern at the moment is my weight. I am actually underweight for my height (about 8.5 stones and 5 ft 6) and keep losing weight for no apparent reason. I eat fairly heathily and enjoy running and squash, but my habits haven't changed at all, and yet I keep losing weight (from nearly 10 stones about 4 months ago). This seems to be the exact opposite problem that most woman with PCOS have, and I'm a little confused about what it means. Any advice-information appreciated.
Dear Alison:
I understand how worried you are about your weight loss. Let me reassure you that this in fact is part of the treatment for PCOS, and certainly your diet habits and regular exercise can simply be the reason for this lost in weight. However if weight loss is decreasing in excess, one of the first conditions to rule out are thyroid diseases, I would suggest you to consult your primary care physician if your weight loss is related to nervousness, diarrhea, palpitations, even irregular menses can be associated with thyroid conditions. I wish you the best. |
