PCOS and Cervical Cancer

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, my sister is 38 years old and was recently diagnosed with PCOS and cervical cancer. She was told she is on stage 1 of the cancer, but she was better off getting a hysterectomy since her ovaries have too many cysts and the chances of her getting pregnant are not great. This to me doesn't seem right and the doctor's decision to suggest a hysterectomy is too rushed. Is it possible to fight the cancer without having to do the hysterectomy since it's only stage 1 of the desease?

Dear Vel: Stage I cervical cancer is curable with optimal surgical removal of the cancer by hysterectomy. The potential for child bearing is an important factor to be considered while deciding for the surgical treatment of this cancer. For those who wish to become pregnant conization and radical trachelectomy are the available options for treatment. However, there is a risk of pregnancy complications and infertility due to scarring or cervical insufficiency, after cervical cancer treatment.

I ovarian cancer is curable in the majority of patients with optimal surgical removal of the cancer. The potential for child bearing is an important factor to be considered while deciding for the surgical treatment of this cancer. Even if surgery is delayed until the child  bearing is complete, it is the only option for cure even at this stage. Despite surgical removal of the cancer, up to 40 percent of patients with stage I ovarian cancer will experience a recurrence of their cancer, because there may be some microscopic cancer cells that may have spread outside the ovary and therefore were not removed by surgery. For this reason usually adjuvant therapy with chemo or radiotherapy is indicated in some cases along with surgery.
