Heavy bleeding with infrequent periods |

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 19 years old and i hardly get my period. I've had it since I was 14, but I can count on two hands how many I have had in my life. I get UTI's sometimes and when I do get my period it is super heavy. I am not very stressed nor am I sick. Should i go to a gyno or am I over reacting? Dear AMANDA: A visit to gynecologist would be helpful in the determination of the reason for irregular periods. It is possible that the ovaries may not be ovulating with every cycle, and so may be the reason that you have a super heavy flow during the periods in which ovulation occurs, else you may have spottings or no flow at all. There could be a possiblity of presence of ovarian cysts due to the absence of ovulation, which would be best assessed with the help of ultrasound.
