Can pcos woman ovulate without the metformin?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My doctor started me with a new batch of meds to over come the PCO i have (i want to get pregnant). she changed the dosage of the metformin from 2 x 500 mg to 1 x 850 mg and add birth control pills with it; its been my second month; and this only makes my cycle shorter; but the minute im off of this it will return back. is there any posibility for me to get of the metformin to ovulate? i've somehow over dosage(abit) on metformin already, and it made me so weak.

Dear Dani: Metformin is prescribed in PCOS because certain studies show that it induces ovulation and normalize menstrual cycles. It is also effective in controlling obesity which may help in ovulation. The OCPs regulate the cycle and prevent the unopposed action of estrogen. The treatment that your doctor has advised is normal protocol in pcos and you need not be concerned. I would suggest you continue treatment and once your periods are regular, discuss treatment option with ovulating enhancing drugs like clomiphen.
