Does Nicorette work?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello I have been smoking for almost 35-40 years now. Lately I can tell its been affecting my life as I can't even breathe properly. I don't like the fact I can't even walk 1 minute without huffing and puffing. My grandchildren have got me this patch called Nicorette. Is it something that is safe and does it work?

When you discontinue to smoke, intense nicotine withdrawal symptoms may occur.  These can range from increased heart rate, mood disturbances  (nicotine releases dopamine which helps to stabilize mood),  sweating of the hands, and overall a jittery feeling. Cold turkey attempts seldom work because they do not address the physical cravings for nicotine, but nicotine products helps to relieve your cravings, while gradually weaning your body from nicotine.  Specifically, the patch allows a controlled and slow release of nicotine over a 24 hour period.  It works as a temporary aid to help you quit smoking by reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms until your body no longer needs nicotine. Make sure you have the correct step of the Nicorette to begin smoking cessation.  Nicorette comes in 3 different strengths Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3.  The patch generally takes a rough range of about 12 weeks to complete.  However, this is just a range some people may need longer depending on your body and cravings.
