Sex with a Bladder Infection

DEAR ASK THE DOCTOR: I currently have a bladder infection. Can I still have sex with my boyfriend while i have this bladder infection? Will he get a bladder infection as well because I have it?

DEAR MELISSA: You can have sex but it will be quite painful and will aggravate the condition. You can't "catch" a urinary tract infection. It is possible that you can transfer the bacteria to your partner but not the actual infection. A UTI is a bacterial infection in the urethra and very prominent in women more than men due to a shorter urethra in women. If you do have a UTI, go see a doctor right away and get it cleared up. Sex will only make it worse and that is what causes it in most cases.

My advice would be to avoid sex until the infection heals and ask your partner to wash his genitals before sex. This may sound crazy, but UTI's can move up the ureters (connected to the kidneys) and cause a kidney infection, which can be life-threatening. Also, the same germs that cause UTI's can also cause PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), which can lead to scarring, ectopic pregnancies (which can lead to death, if they rupture) and infertility.
