UTI and White Blood Cells

Dear Ask The Doctor: When you have a diagnosed UTI based on the results of a UA would you also have to have an elevated WBC on your CBC or could you have a normal CBC with a UTI

Dear Sarah:

I understand your doubt about UTI and Leukocytosis. It is possible to have a urine test which result come back with a positive presence of bacteria and without an increase in your Leukocytes or white cells. This is known as Asymptomatic Bacteriuria.

Asymptomatic Bacteriuria is characterized by >100,000 colony-forming units in a patient without symptom and should be treated in individuals who are about to undergo urogenital tract procedures, have renal transplants, or are pregnant.
