Hand foot mouth disease and impetigo in child

Dear Ask The Doctor: I was told my son has hand foot and mouth and also impetigo is it normal for him to get an all over rash before he gets better ?

Dear Kayla: Impetigo is a contagious superficial bacterial infection observed most frequently in children. Impetigo may present as red sores that may rupture and ooze, itching and painless fluid filled blisters. The lesions are usually seen on the child's face but may also spread to other parts of the body.

Impetigo is a highly contagious. It is recommended to wash (do not scrub) your son's skin several times a day, preferably with an antibacterial soap and always use a clean washcloth and towel each time. The lesions heal slowly and antibiotics and good general health and hygiene may help prevent further spread of the infection.
