Getting a Tattoo While suffering from a Parvo Virus Infection

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi. I have Human Parvovirus B19, currently experiencing joint pain, swelling, fatigue, and most recently, the return of the rash, now all over my body. My question is rather vain, lol, I have a tattoo appointment in two days, and I am wondering if there is any reason why I should not have the tattoo done? I'm wondering if Parvo will slow down my recovery, or increase my risk of inflammation or swelling, or even infection. Thanks.
Dear Amie: Even though a parvo virus infection may not necessarily be a contraindication to getting a tattoo. People with fifth disease are most contagious when it seems like they have "just a cold" and before they get the rash or joint pain and swelling. After you get the rash, you are probably not contagious. So, it is usually safe for you to go back to work or get a tattoo when the rash subsides. |
