Dear Ask The Doctor: I have started having sex recently. My boy friend likes to bite me softly in the neck and breast during sex. My skin develops a rash whereever he bites within few minutes. It is not at all painful, but very visible and embarrassing. It usually disappears within few hours. Is it something serious and am I allergic to something?
Dear Jenn: It is common to see bruising in young women and in most of the cases physical examination and investigations will not reveal any abnormalities. Most of the cases are reported in the summer months when the bruises are more evident. If the bruising continues, you may need further evaluation by your family physician. Though most of the time this is normal and needs only reassurance, your doctor may need to rule out other diseases that may cause easy bruising. Thrombocytopenia, Von willebrand's disease, certain drugs, anemia, dietary deficiency of vitamin C and zinc all can cause bruising.
