Strategies in smoking cessation

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hai this mahesh from india. my age 30. i am state smoking last 4yeras. now i want to stop. but i not controling. what i do

Dear Mahesh: The fundamental initial step to stopping smoking is deciding that you in fact want to quit. I would advise attending your family doctor for further advice and medications, to aid with smoking cessation. The main barrier to quitting smoking is the addictiveness of nicotine and the undesirable nicotine withdrawal side-effects. Your family doctor may refer you to a smoking cessation clinic in your family practice for guidance and support. He may also prescribe nicotine replacement therapy to counteract the nicotine withdrawal side-effects in the form of patches, gum, lozenges or nicotine inhaler. There are alternate medications available such as buproprion or varenicline if nicotine replacement therapy is unsuitable.
