Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello For about 3 months now I have woke up every single morning feeling extremely tired and like I have a fog over me the entire day. My eyes feel heavy and I feel like I am not getting good sleep. I have red circles under my eyes in the morning and even some blue and some soft spots under my eye that I feel like I can press. Also accompanying me with these symtpoms are a constant stuffed nose, blepharitis that I have now that is being treated, feeling like I can't concentrate occasionally, and a dry mouth occasionally upon waking. I have been told I have a slightly deviated septum to the left by a doctor and slightly enlarged adenoids, but I do not know if that would be causing my extreme tiredness. Any help is much appreciated! thanks!
Dear Brendan: Deviated Nasal Septum is one of the common reasons for a stuffy nose and recurrent infections. The septum is a thin partition of bone and cartilage that divides your nasal cavity into two. If your nasal septum is deviated to one side or the other, it can impede the air flow and mucus drainage from the sinuses causing symptoms like snoring, recurrent nasal and sinus infections, headaches and snoring. Treatment usually involves surgical repositioning of your septum, known as septoplasty. This procedure takes a couple of hours and will usually take care of almost all your nose related problems. So I suggest that you consult an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) specialist for definitive treatment of the cause. For temporary relief of your symptoms you can try using nasal strips and antihistamines or antibiotics to control infections. |
