Torticollis

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi,i am 20 years old girl and suffering from torticollis, what is the treatment for it?

Dear Sos: Most of the uncomplicated cervical muscle contractures or spasms (torticollis) due to mechanical factors respond well to conservative treatment , meaning: initially, protection, rest, ice, compression, all these can help the affected muscles to heal and as soon as the pain is controlled you should begin the stretching exercises of the neck. Heat can be applied to help with pain and stiffness. It is recommended also taking anti-inflammatory medication (i.e.: “Aleve”),  along with rest the strained muscles and avoid the activities that produced discomfort or pain. You could follow a Physical Therapy program for 4-6 weeks and practice at home the stretching exercises above all. The healing time and conditions for each patient are different. Try to do an appropriate warming-up and stretching before any significant physical activity.
