Sever sunburn and overexposure to the sun

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have sunburnt my legs from just above the knees to the ankles. I am expienceing tingleing in my feet now I believe from the sever sweling.. I have been placing cold cloths on my legs to help slow the the burn, taking otc ibuprofin to help with the swelling and maintain the pain. also I have been useing after sun burn lotion with lidocane to alieviate the burn pain. what can I do to help relieve the sever swelling in my lower legs? I was out in the sun for 4 hours on the water, I did apply sunblock more than once too. spf 30

Dear Jennifer: The swelling that you have got in your legs is due to the fluid retention. I would advice you to keep yourself very well hydrated and it will go with time. However if you start experiencing any other symptoms like loss of sensation or tingling you need to see a physician in person immediately. All the best.
