Diabetes not controlled on metformin

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 73 year old African American with diabetes. Which is better for me, 40mg - Gliburide or 1000 mg - Metformin? I was taking the Gliburide from another doctor, she moved out of town. My new doctor changed me to Metformin. My blood sugar has gone up over 300. What do you think has caused this change?
Dear Charles: Since your sugar levels are not under control with just metformin alone, a metformin/glyburide combination pill can achieve greater blood sugar control than either drug alone. Also patients receiving the metformin/glyburide pill experience a lower incidence of certain drug-related adverse effects like abdominal fullness, loose stools and symptoms of hypoglycemia than those treated with glyburide or metformin alone. |
