Testicular Mass - When to see the Doctor?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I felt a bead sized hard substance in my scrotum twice, kind of just floating around inside, not attached to the testicles. I have a hard time locating it at all since the last time I felt it. I am wondering what this could be? I looked up testicular cancer and that seems to be a lump or bulge coming out of the testicle itself. Can you give me some more information on what this could be? Thank you.
Dear Billy: It is common to assume any mass that one feels could be cancer. The probability of testicular cancer depends on your age, smoking status and family history. It is impossible to diagnose your mass without a proper examination but it could be anything from a varicocele, testicular torsion, hernia and yes, even cancer. I suggest you see your doctor immediately if you are in any pain or discomfort. If you are not in any pain, discomfort or experiencing fevers I suggest you observe it over a short period of time (1-2 weeks). If it is still present, I would see your doctor. |
