Why is testicular pain and swelling serious?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My son-in-law has a very painful swollen testicle and we are all wondering what it might be and what kind of doctor he needs to see

It could be a number of things ranging from testicular hernia, testiculat torsion (testicles twisting on itself), hydrocele, varicocele, testicular cancer, to name a few. He should go to ER as soon as possible so he can be assessed and perhaps an ultrasound can be done. Urologists are experts on these conditions but what he is having may be an emergency; ER doctors have good knowledge and clinical judgment on these conditions as well. The testicle has a single blood supply for each side and if the condition he has will compromise this, infertility or difficulties in conceiving may be a complication. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always.
